So far I like this class because it interests me so much more then any of my other typical classes like algebra or chemistry. Sociology covers information that will actually help you in life and is more important then memorizing something like... the periodic table. I thought about some things this week that I had never thought about before. One activity that stands out was the one where three students sat in front of the class and the class came up with words that they thought described them. I thought it was funny that the majority of the class hardly knew these three students but made assumptions about them just by seeing and maybe talking to them once or twice. This activity really proved how people judge others on a day to day basis. Also, we had to write stereotypes and the majority of the class all had very similar stereotypes written down. I found this very weird and sad at the same time. Judging and stereotyping people we don't even know are things people in our society do on a day to day basis. These activities really opened me eyes to how our society judges each other.
I found it interesting that more then half the class raised their hands when Ms. Breur asked the class to raise their hands if they don't care what other people think about them. It doesn't matter who you are...Everyone cares what others think of them. It's human nature. I think the reason that everyone raised their hands was because they wanted to come off as cool and not vulnerable. Everyone wants to act tough but the truth is everyone is vulnerable. People are afraid to be themselves... because what if someone doesn't like them? We are too caught up in what people think of us to really and truly be ourselves.
Judging, Stereotypes, and Vulnerability were the themes of this week in sociology.
